IZVLEČKI PREDAVANJ

Zinka Zecevic: Frailty and Falls

With our increasing aging population set to double over the next three decades and with 50% of older adults over the age of 85 living with frailty, we need to upskill occupational therapists to meet the needs of our patients with frailty and deliver safe and effective community frailty services. This talk will address how the Frailty Community Service in London UK delivers an integrated multidisciplinary (MDT) approach in identifying and treating frailty with an aim of reversing and optimising the avoidable adverse outcomes (e.g. falls) associated with severe frailty for patients living in their homes.

Katrin Pechstadt : Occupational narratives database experience

The meaning of occupations worldwide is influenced by various life circumstances and contexts, which shape the individual significance of these activities. An understanding of these meanings is of vital importance to occupational therapists. In order to achieve this goal, the WFOT Occupational Narrative Database aims to create a global repository that will allow for the description of the individual performance and meaning of activities. The presentation will introduce the Occupational Narrative Database and discuss opportunities for participation. The challenges of the project will also be addressed.

Michael Sy: Occupational justice health questionnaire: A tool for advocacy towards occupational participation

"Occupational justice" is an emerging concept in the field of occupational therapy and starting to be introduced in other health professions. Occupational justice refers to the affordances, opportunities, and possibilities given to people and groups to participate in everyday activities as part of survival, health, and wellbeing. Occupational therapists are recognized professionals to facilitate inclusive participation of all people without prejudice and to promote occupational justice considering people’s circumstances. In this session, we will be discussing how we can translate occupational justice concepts into tools for practice when working with people and groups as they navigate their everyday lives. Specifically, the Occupational Justice Health Questionnaire will be introduced as a tool for practice in occupational therapy, disability work, and justice work with consideration of the Slovenian context.

Eric Asaba: Reflections on participation and partnerships in practice: Implications for healthcare, education, and community settings

Over the past decade there has been a surge in terminology that connotes some form of collaborative partnership, terms such as co-creation, co-design, and patient and public involvement to name a few. Although the ideas from which these terms stem extend back in different histories of ideas, it is within the last decade that these terms have made their way into healthcare related research and education
including occupational therapy and occupational science. This talk will build on examples from research and education to illustrate how methods and methodologies impact how people engage in partnerships, which lead to different types of processes and outcomes. Reflections will include alignments to conceptual foundations of occupation as well as on levels of meaning and risk in the potentially collaborative and/or participatory in these partnerships.

Lisette Farias Vera: Occupation-based transformative work based on OS concepts

There has been an increasing international movement of occupational therapists and occupational scientists who have questioned the role of the profession in responding to situations of oppression and exclusion through occupation. This critique has developed into theoretical concepts within occupational science that attempt to enact the social role and ethical responsibility of occupational therapists to work towards social transformation using occupation as a means. These concepts focus on occupation at a macro level as shaped by socio-economic, political and cultural factors and power relations that marginalise and privilege certain groups in society. This presentation will introduce key concepts within critical occupational science and illustrate what is meant by occupation-based transformative work/practice with examples from occupational science research.

Anneliis Aavik: The challenges and joys of psychiatric occupational therapy

Occupational therapy stands as a cornerstone in psychiatric care, addressing the intricate relationship between mental health and engagement in meaningful activities. In this workshop, we will highlight the importance of OT in psychiatric settings, focusing on assessment, intervention, and rehabilitation to promote recovery and independence for individuals facing mental health challenges. Key topics to be covered include: Assessment techniques, Tailored intervention strategies and therapeutic approaches, Collaboration within multidisciplinary teams, Empowering clients and families This workshop is designed for professionals, students, and anyone interested in learning more about the integral role of occupational therapy in mental health care.

Michael Sy: Hidden, non-sanctioned and dark side of occupations

The concept of occupation has been historically and professionally defined as the meaningful actions that humans do to maintain their health and wellbeing. However, in recent years, a critical stance towards occupation has been espoused to uncover its conceptual complexity, relevance, and reality to people's contemporary lives. In this session, we will be discussing the idea of how occupations are characterised as hidden, non-sanctioned, or on the dark side. Then, we will identify relevant examples of these from both global and local contexts in order for us to have a better understanding of the doing, being, becoming, and belonging of people and communities.

Sarah Kufner: Mindset and transformative action. Where the mind leads the way…in being occupied.

This workshop offers, after a short presentation on perspectives and concepts of mindset, practical investigations on influencing dynamics of occupation. Participants will therefore be introduced to the Model of Occupational Wholeness (Yazdani, F., 2017) being offered a „safe space“ to reflect on their own mindset and it’s impact on perceiving and experiencing life and freedom of choice. The workshop aims to engage participants into „transformative action“ through visualizing their actual and expected states of being, belonging and becoming moderated through doing- step by step, using triangles and their incongruences as agile base of transforming intervention. The visibility of individual dynamics of what the participants do/don't do, what and where they feel they belong to/not belong, what their
individual goals and visions for the future are/can be - invites to a greater self-awareness of the impact of „mindset“ and how it moldes their „sense of wholeness“ in everyday life.

Mike Jarrey & Sylvie de Turck: Occupation and Language

In this informal session we wish to present and discuss the experience of Flemish occupational therapy from the perspective of professional language. The history, challenges and solutions we have worked on. We wish to gain insights from the international presence and further the conversation around occupational language on our return to Belgium. So please bring your own experiences of using occupational science/therapy language in your own language and the challenges and solutions you have faced at home.
